PLA and PETG are the two filaments most makers reach for — and the two they most often confuse. Both are easy to buy, both print on almost any machine, but they shine in very different situations. Here is a clear, no-jargon comparison.
The short answer
Choose PLA for looks, detail and easy printing. Choose PETG when the part needs to survive heat, moisture, sunlight or stress.
Printability
PLA is the friendliest filament there is: low temperatures, minimal warping, sharp detail. PETG is still beginner-friendly but a little fussier — it likes a clean bed, slightly higher temperatures and slower retraction to control stringing.
Strength & durability
PETG is tougher and more flexible; it bends before it snaps and shrugs off impacts that would crack PLA. It also resists water and UV, so it holds up outdoors where PLA becomes brittle.
Heat resistance
PLA softens around 55–60 °C — a car dashboard in summer will deform it. PETG comfortably handles ~70–80 °C, making it the better pick for functional parts.

- Miniatures, display models, prototypes: PLA.
- Brackets, outdoor parts, mechanical and food-adjacent items: PETG.
