Textured PEI vs smooth PEI
Textured PEI gives a pleasant matte, stippled bottom finish and grips most filaments beautifully with zero glue. Smooth PEI produces a glossy, mirror-like bottom layer — gorgeous, but it demands cleaner habits and the occasional glue stick for stubborn materials.
Which to use for which filament
- PLA, PETG, TPU: textured PEI is the easy default.
- Glossy-bottom display prints: smooth PEI.
- PETG on smooth PEI: always use a glue-stick release layer, or PETG can fuse to the sheet and tear it.
Keep it sticking
Adhesion problems are almost always a dirty plate. Skin oils are the enemy. Wash the sheet with warm water and dish soap every few prints, and wipe with isopropyl alcohol between washes.
When to replace your plate
Replace a PEI plate when the coating is visibly worn shiny in the print area, gouged, or no longer holds prints even after a proper clean. A fresh PEI build plate is one of the cheapest upgrades to print reliability.
